If expr is null, then Oracle returns NULL which is the result of the first search. Two nulls are considered to be equivalent by Oracle. The returned String is of VARCHAR2 datatype and is in the same character set as the first result parameter. expr, search, and the result can be any of the datatypes CHAR, VARCHAR2, NCHAR, or NVARCHAR2. If expr and search are character data, Decode in SQL, then Oracle compares them using non-padded comparison semantics. If a previous search is equal to the expression, the evaluation is terminated. It evaluates search values only before comparing them to expressions rather than evaluating all search values. Oracle Database uses short-circuit evaluation. If the default is omitted, then Oracle returns null. SQL commands list, If a match is not found, then the default is returned. If the expression is equal to a search, then the corresponding result is returned by the Oracle Database. DECODE compares the expression to each search value one by one. In Oracle, the DECODE in SQL allows us to add procedural if-then-else logic to the query. The optional ELSE keyword introduces another Transact-SQL statement that is executed when the IF condition is not satisfied: the Boolean expression returns FALSE. The Transact-SQL statement that follows an IF keyword and its condition are executed if the condition is satisfied: the Boolean expression returns TRUE. Decode in SQL function performs the task of CASE statements. It compares a given expression with each search value one by one and returns a result based on outcomes received from the comparison. The parameters used in the above syntax are:ĭECODE function in Standard Query Language (SQL) is used to add procedural IF – THEN – ELSE-like statements to a query.
